Inside 'Lucidity' by Simon Hanselmann
Lucidity doesn't break Hanselmann's formula, but further showcases his untouchable ability to combine the humorous, grotesque and emotionally devastating.
Lucidity starts as many of the stories starring Megg, Mogg, Owl and Werewolf Jones do - with drugs. After reading a book about lucid dreaming, Megg convinces the crew to take some sleeping pills, chill in the garage and see where their dreams take them. WWJ immediately passes on and is thrust is a manic, hypersexual adventure involving public buttsex . Megg is in the isolated wilderness learning how to fly. Mogg has a bad trip fueled by anxiety and doubt about his relationship with Megg. Owl does... his taxes. Joined by every alternative reality version of himself you could think of. As the dreams take hold and spiral downward, everyone's paths eventually cross and hesitation sinks in as they are unable to pull themselves out. Only Hanselmann can take his truly ridiculous characters, run the gamut of hilarious and grotesque situations and still have you feeling sympathetic toward them after their incredible amounts of bad choices.
Lucidity is already sold out. Hanselmann's self-produced zines are available periodically through his personal webstore. You can find the official Megg, Mogg and Owl collected releases available via Fantagraphics Books.
