Independent Comics Hiding On Patreon

Independent Comics Hiding On Patreon

Patreon is a website that can turn any creator (art, audio, video) into a monthly subscription. Think of it as a low cost, continual Kickstarter for someone you're a huge fan of. There are some gems hiding on the site in the form of comics from Michel Fiffe, Melissa Mendes and Charles Forsman.

When navigating Patreon's top comic creators the first thing you'll notice is the huge disparity between some creators "patrons" and others. Some established webcomic creators have thousands of people backing them amounting to literally tens of thousands of dollars per month. There's also a shitload of furries. Dig a little deeper and you will find pages for independent comic creators like Michel Fiffe (Copra), Charles Forsman (Celebrated Summer) and Melissa Mendes (Lou).

When 'backed' (at various tiers of financial commitment), patrons unlock behind the scenes content blogs for each creator. Michel Fiffe's acts as if you're a fly on the wall of his art studio, getting many drawings at various stages of completeness posted throughout the week. For someone with such a clean and classic art style, it is very fun to get to see the process. Backers gain previews on Copra material as well as an exclusive Patreon comic called Negativeland.

Charles Forsman and Melissa Mendes' pages continue to offer a similar service to that of currently defunct Oily Comics, the former publishing outlet for their monthly minicomics. Patrons gain access to a monthly issue of Forsman's I Am Not Okay With This (to be collected in full by Fantagraphics) and Mendes' The Weight. Their blogs respectively give an inside scoop to their creative and personal lives.

Patreon has one incredible flaw: it's search capabilities. I've read on various parts of the internet that this is something that is currently being rectified, but there could be many more creators on there that aren't able to located if they are not in the top 20 or backed by creator's pages that I personally follow. Watch your favorite indie creators social media to see if they are also on Patreon: it's a low-cost, high-reward way to view independent comics in a whole new way.
